The basis of our position on violence, including corporal punishment, is children’s rights, including the right of children to participate in programmes based on adequate, scientific and ethical research. Children and young people’s participation is essential in increasing the awareness and capacity of children and adults to end violence, including physical and humiliating punishment, and should be central to any action that aims to eliminate violence against children. For example, our latest regional study on physical and emotional violence against children sought children’s participation from the outset, including in setting research questions and advocating for national and regional policy changes.
